Embrace the Tarpit

Whenever a new tool in the productivity space is released - say a new To Do list or a new PK app, you’ll invariably read the following advice in every discussion around it: Beware the productivity tarpit, it’s easy to get sucked down while setting up the latest fancy app, feeling productive when all you did was moving around stuff without actually generating value.

I propose the opposite: Embrace the tarpit, jump into it, get sucked down for a while. I have been doing this for ages and, after starting out with Evernote and Wunderlist, I have moved my notes and todos almost everywhere, including:

Based on my experience, jumping into the tarpit once in a while had cost me some time, but I always emerged with my stuff being in better shape than before, for multiple reasons:

The PKM space has undergone significant transformations ever since I started with my humble Evernote & Wunderlist setup, and even though it seems things have calmed down a bit, a lot of things are still moving. Therefore, whenever something bothers me with my current setup, I consider jumping on a new one to try out the new ideas and concept myself. Sometimes they stick, sometimes they don’t, but in almost all cases, investing the day or two to migrate has paid off very quickly.
